2010: An Album Retrospective

How can 2010 almost be over? Seems like this year has gone especially quickly. I know everyone always says that but this year more so than ever. Maybe something to do with graduating uni this year.

Anyways, got me thinking 2010 has been a pretty great year for new albums, and as such I have decided to launch the inaugural STRANGEWAYS 2010 ALBUM AWARDS. Very Prestigious Award, coveted by many, received by few. And here are the categories:

Best Albums
    1. Foals - Total Life Forever

Amazing follow up to their explosive debut album Antidotes, Total Life Forever is distinctly different yet familiar. A million emotions all packaged up into one mesmerizing album. Couldn't have asked for more from these guys.

Track 'After Glow' is my personal pick, which is even more amazing when witnessed live. Jus' sayin'.

     2. Groove Armada - Black Light

These guys never stop developing their sound and their latest is perhaps their best yet. Vibrant synth-pop at it's best.

While using such a heavy synth throughout would make it easy for this album to get bogged down and slow, Groove Armada seem to effortlessly travel through time and tempo.

Personal favourite is 'I Won't Kneel'.

     3. LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening

After the mayhem that was Sound of Silver I suppose it was inevitable that Mr. Murphy would take a step back and assess, and the result is the matured sounds of This Is Happening.

Another live performance highlight from this year!

Listen to closing track 'Home' for a pick-me-up, and all your troubles will drift away in a tad under eight minutes.

    4. Cloud Control - Bliss Release

The debut for Australian outfit Cloud Control saw them pick up a J-Award nomination for there efforts, and propelled them to tour our little neck of the woods (Canberra) not once but twice!

Their popularity speaks for itself, although I wish they didn't sound quite so similar to Fleet Foxes.

    'Ghost Story' is the pick.

    5. Chromeo - Business Casual

SEX ON FIRE! Hate to reference KoL, but if I had to use three words to describe this album they would be it.

Album cover says it all really...

'I'm Contagious' will boost your mojo by 100%.  guaranteed.

     6. Miami Horror - Illumination

Glorious, uninhibited synth-pop at it's best! Perhaps not the most original sound from these Aussie rockers, but I really can't fault the album much more than that.

Music snobs will disagree, but this album is fun. Pure and simple.

'Summersun' is perfect for the weeks ahead.

     7. Hot Chip - One Life Stand

I find it hard to believe it was this year, but there you go. One Life Stand is undeniably Hot Chip's most mature sounding album, for these now veterans of the indie-pop scene.

'I Feel Better' will make you feel better. Hahaha, get it?

    8. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

While I wouldn't go as far as to award this album a perfect 10.0, as some fellow members of the Internet music community have done, I will agree that this is a superb effort from the ever controversial Mr. West. You get the feeling that he ignored all the hype and made something he wanted to. R35P3CT.

Can't decide between 'Runaway' and 'Lost In The World'.
    Listen to Both.

    9. Mark Ronson - Record Collection

And the prize for best album cover of the year goes to...
Mr Ronson, the eclectic British genius (anyone else picture him like a mad scientist in a lab?) truly delivered with Record Collection.

Crank this one up loud for summer!

Can't go past 'Somebody to Love Me'.

    10. Aeroplane - We Can't Fly

I really wanted to put this one higher. I really did. I just felt there was something missing from the now one piece Belgian outfit Aeroplane.

Because I friggin' love Aeroplane like nothing else, and while this album does have many strong points, it also has a few seemingly pointless holes. Nonetheless, a solid effort.

'We Can't Fly' is the clear standout of the album, perhaps single of the year?

    Notable Mentions

So close, yet so far. These albums were all on high rotation throughout my  year, but didn't quite make the cut for one reason or another.

    Bag Raiders - Bag Raiders
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot & The Son of Chico Dusty
    Caribou - Swim
    Chiddy Bang - The Preview
    Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles
    El Guincho - Pop Negro
    Girl Talk - All Day
Major Lazer - Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do
    The Holidays - Post Paradise
The John Steel Singers - Tangalooma
Two Door Cinema Club - Tourist History
    Vampire Weekend - Contra
    Yeasayer - Odd Blood

    Notable Misses

This section is dedicated to albums which I held a lot of hope for, yet ultimately failed to deliver. Most of the artists in this list had previous releases which I really liked. Some of them just sucked. Fail.

    Born Ruffians - Say It
Kings of Leon - Come Around Sundown
    M.I.A. - Maya
    MGMT - Congratulations
    Ratatat - LP4
    Sleigh Bells - Treats
Uffie - Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans

That's it folks, what did you guys think?
What does the future hold for 2011?

What are you gonna vote for in the Hottest 100?

We'll be back with more STRANGEWAYS goodness before you know it.

    Friends! Many things afoot:

Firstly, thanks to everyone who came to Strangeways on Friday night!
Epic night, we had lots of fun, and judging by some of the photos looks like some of you guys did too. Major thanks to the amazing Ben Davies for these snaps.

Bruce Willis even made a guest appearance! He hates papparazzi tho...

This dude decided to give our mascot 'Gnomey' the Gnome some beer, but everyone knows Gnomes only drink cider... Now he's got a massive hangover. >_<

Vote for Strangeways to play Foreshore 2010!
Friends, we need your help... If you would like to see Strangeways at Foreshore 2010, then I'm afraid you're gonna have to vote like your life depends on it.

    STRANGEWAYS, GOODBYE

    Friends,

STRANGEWAYS DJs were having a beer the other day with Mario's godfather and mentor, John Farnham, reflecting on life and the fleeting nature of creativity.

... and we decided to RETIRE.

AND WE'RE THROWING ONE LAST GREATEST HITS RETROSPECTIVE PARTY TO CELEBRATE!

Let us take you on a magical mystery tour, a musical thrillfest, and a final flourish of visual delight.

Reminisce with us our many themes - from the galactic silver foil, to the French, the house party and the Splendour - each will be recreated like a chapter from the tome of STRANGEWAYS history!

So don that 50s skirt, that space suit, come rock around the clock, hip, hop, dance "en bloc" and let STRANGEWAYS LET THE BEAT DROP...

Strangeways DJs playing ANU Red Party 2010

    Friends,

STRANGEWAYS DJs are proud to announce we'll be supporting the most worthy of causes, and the most epic of parties, bundled together in one tidy little red packgage.

If you went last year (and we're assuming you did seeing as most of Canberra was there) you'll know you're in for one incredible night of Canberra's best bands and DJs, which this year includes Hancock Basement, Pang, Staky/Exposed and others.

Last year, Red Party raised over $20,000 for much-needed HIV diagnostic equipment at Philippines General Hospital, helping reduce the spread of HIV amongst a vulnerable and impoverished community. This year, ALL profits are raised in support of Hope for Cambodian Children, who provide and care for women and children affected by HIV/AIDS, many of whom are orphans.

Tickets are only $25, and the first 200 tickets sold will receive a 10% discount. You'll get instant Karma just for attending!

We'll see you next Friday 15 October.

    And remember to wear red!

    Peace,
    STRANGEWAYS

STRANGEWAYS NIGHTFEST @ Transit feat. SURPRISE INTERNATIONAL GUEST!

    Friends,

We are “bitter” about missing out on playing the real Nightfest. We are feeling “wronged”. We are feeling “spiteful”. All the DJs of Canby want to play @ a gig w/lots of 40y/o drunk public servants.

    ...
So STRANGEWAYS DJs are throwing our own long weekend Sunday night special:

    STRANGEWAYS NIGHTFEST!

THIS SUNDAY NIGHT, 26 SEPTEMBER at Transit.

    Remember Monday's a public holz.

… a MASSIVE, FRESHER-THAN-THE-HARVEST PARTY with lots of fairy lights and garden gnomes. Promise it will beat tulips and “Garnier World”.

And we've roped in a SURPRISE INTERNATIONAL GUEST DJ (not Mark Carmody)!

(You have to come to see who he is... see some press clippings below for clues!)

Anyway, this night will be beautiful!

… possibly not as beautiful as the real Nightfest. But it will be beautiful in its ugliness.

    h8 Floriade.

    On SoundCloud

Well I suppose it was inevitable...

Strangeways DJs have joined the cutting edge technology that is SoundCloud.

Here you will find all music/mashez/mixes available for listening pleasure, and just because we love you; downloadable!

http://soundcloud.com/strangeways-djs is where you'll find us...

Also featured on this fine site is a clever idea which I wish we'd had earlier: not one but TWO albums of pure Radiohead vs. Jay-Z mashups. This inspiration is titled 'Jadiohead' and you can check it out here.

Next Strangeways on the 10th of October, details to be released soon.

And remember, this election: Vote Strangeways!

    Thursday 12 August 2010

    Vote for Strangeways!

    Dear Friends,

This election, Strangeways DJs stands for the part-ay, mad tunez and plenty of funtimes. Strangeways believes in your rights on the dancefloor, stopping the boredom and moving forward, side to side and around in circles in dance-like manouvres.

Most importantly, remember: Friends don't let friends vote for Pang!

    This election, vote 1 STRANGEWAYS.

Authorised by Strangeways DJs Canberra, spoken by B. Willis.

    STRANGEWAYS… With a vengeance!

Q: What do DIE HARD, PULP FICTION, DIE HARD 2, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, DIE HARD: WITH A VENGEANCE and RUGRATS: THE MOVIE have in common?

    A: The man. The legend.

    Bruce Willis.

And it’s because of our love for popcorn schlock and our penchant for the absurd that we have decided to throw what might be the most MEMORABLE, MIND BENDING party of your LIFE in honour of this juggernaut of the silver screen!

    FEATURING...
FREE BRUCE WILLIS MASKS for the first 100 through the door!

CLASSIC BRUCE WILLIS films (DIE HARD 1,2,3 and 4!) screening all night!

    And…
    SURPRISE BRUCE WILLIS DJ SET!

So get ready to GO THE WHOLE NINE YARDS and DANCE HARD with a PERFECT STRANGER!

Descend into the veritable SIN CITY of Transit bar and challenge yourself to be the LAST MAN STANDING (You'll need a BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS – we suggest Weetbix).

And when the night is over, you'll be wondering WHAT JUST HAPPENED as you survey the post-ARMAGEDDON destruction on the dance floor.

So don’t COP OUT this Saturday night, August 7th – come down to Transit for a FREE party to end all parties!

It'll be like CHARLIES ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE all night!

Transit Bar will be transformed by a miike snow storm, a temper trap, a veritable passion pit of excitement – just be careful not to squish the pixies or frighten the tame impalas on the synthetic grass dancefloor.

Just yolanda be cool and kick back to Transit’s banging lcd soundsystem.

Best of all, this year entry has been reduced from half a grand to FREE!

    Wow, what a night!

Thanks to everyone who made it down to transit on Friday for what was a truly unforgettable night. If you had as much fun as we did we know you'll be talking about it for weeks to come...

There are a few people we'd like to thank for making it such a special night; firstly big-ups to Nina Las Vegas for swinging by our little neck of the woods and playing such a great set. Thanks to Ben Davies (with a little help from his friends) for some spectacluar photos from the night, which are now up on fasterlouder. Thanks to Katy Hall for her help in setting up and decorating. And most importantly, thank YOU for coming out.

Next Strangeways is already in the pipeline, so keep your ear to the ground and we'll hopefully see you soon!

STRANGEWAYS presents "HOUSE PARTY!" feat. NINA LAS VEGAS (triple j)

    Friends,

STRANGEWAYS is throwing a HOUSE PARTY!

    (at Transit…)

And the guest of honour is none other than TRIPLE J’S NINA LAS VEGAS, host of your regular weekend radio hoedown!

Representatives of every different musical genre and era will be attending, and together we’ll spin the clothesline of popular music – in between rounds of Goon of Fortune!

It’ll be a whole evening of heaven, not just seven minutes, with NINA LAS VEGAS spinning tunes (and bottles?) between 11:00pm and 12:30am.

And get in early, cos it’s only $5 on the door and the house will surely pack out!

STRANGEWAYS DJs – hipper than the hop, fresher than the harvest, the only fire that can live in the rain – will play 8-11pm and pick it up again from 12:30am till the cops shut the party down.

We’ll clear out the breakables and break out the clear plastic cups, all you have to do is get to Transit on FRIDAY 11 JUNE.

    We’ll see you there!

    INDIE // PARTY // UNEXPECTED

    PS. “No randoms”.

It’s Tricky… To rock around the clock (again)!

50’s and 60’s Rock ’n’ Roll vs Party Hip Hop

    So popular – we’re making a sequel!

Earlier this year the STRANGEWAYS DJs audaciously combined two well loved but previously unrelated genres, HIP HOP and classic 50’s and 60’s ROCK ’N’ ROLL, in a blockbusting smash hit adventure of an evening they dubbed “It’s Tricky… To rock around the clock!”

Now, after at least one personal request and rumours of threatening emails, the STRANGEWAYS team has put aside their personal differences to intertwine these two threads of musical history into a sturdy rope of a night that will take place on ANZAC DAY at our beloved TRANSIT BAR. And once again, it will be FREE - ‘cause the more money we come across, the more problems we see.

So put on your BLUE SUEDE SHOES or your ADIDAS, get ready to TWIST AGAIN (like we did last summer), get that DIRT OFF YOUR SHOULDER, SHAKE RATTLE AND ROLL, and JUMP AROUND, or just sip on some GIN AND JUICE or a FUNKY COLD MEDINA (but check yourself before you wreck yourself!)

    See you Sunday night!

We’ll DO THE TIME WARP (AGAIN) and re-enact your favourite SUMMER NIGHTS, get FOOTLOOSE doing some DIRTY DANCING, have a FLASHDANCE and walk 8 MILE(s) with OLIVER to CHICAGO! All this combined with the perverted pop, indie and mash-up delights from the STRANGEWAYS DJs (+ SPECIAL QUESTS)… basically, ANYTHING GOES!
